Spain’s former football boss Luis Rubiales has apologized to the country’s royal family for his grab of the women’s crotch after the World Cup final.

“I’m really ashamed of that,” said the 46-year-old on the talk show “Piers Morgan Uncensored.” “I apologize because I shouldn’t behave like that.”

Shortly after Spain’s final triumph over England in Sydney on August 20, Rubiales grabbed his genitals while celebrating in the stadium’s official gallery. Next to him at that moment were Spain’s Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter Sofia. Now Rubiales tried to explain his action.

“It was unfortunate, but it wasn’t meant negatively. I wanted to say: ‘Bravo, well done!'” he said. He didn’t speak to the queen personally afterwards. “I couldn’t have the opportunity to speak to the queen,” he said. Rubiales resigned from his position as association president on Monday.
