The women’s European Football Championship will take place in the summer of 2025. Germany is there and is looking forward to the draw. But it could also hit the DFB women hard.

This Monday, starting at 6 p.m., the four groups of four for the European Women’s Football Championship in the summer will be drawn in Lausanne, Switzerland. The DFB women are there after their confident qualification and want to take home the title this time after being runners-up in the European Championship in the summer of 2022.

But that will be difficult enough given the high quality of the opponents – and could be a real challenge in the group. Although Germany is placed in draw pot 1, there are real chunks lurking in pots 2 to 4.

Defending champion England can be found in draw pot 2. And Sweden, fifth in the FIFA world rankings, is also in draw pot 3, as are the Netherlands, which are tenth in the world rankings.

The supposedly “small” teams from the European Championship that can be found in draw pot 4 should not be underestimated either. Portugal, for example, fought to a 0-0 draw against the USA at the World Cup in summer 2023. And Finland achieved some notable successes against Italy (2:1) and the Netherlands (1:1) during the European Championship qualification.

With a little bit of luck, Germany could be a group against England, Sweden and Portugal catch. That would make the preliminary round a real challenge. But national coach Christian Wück remained calm. “It’s sometimes better to play directly against very strong teams in the group. It can help to be fully involved in the tournament right from the start,” the women’s national coach told the sports information service: “But that doesn’t mean that “I really want to have England and Sweden in the group.”

Pot 1: Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland (set as hosts to head Group A)

Pot 2: Italy, Iceland, Denmark, England (defending champions)

Pot 3: Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Belgium

Pot 4: Finland, Poland, Portugal, Wales
