The majority of the penalty shooters have so far failed at the 2025 women. Hardly any attempt went into the goal, especially in the quarter -finals. Why is the extreme lack of success from the point?
Even a world footballer like Alexia Putellas did not put her penalty in the goal. Shortly before the end of the EM quarterfinals against Switzerland (2-0), the Spaniard placed her penalty far too central, so that the opposing goalkeeper Livia Peng had no trouble parrying her shot.
Bonmatis Explanation: Fatigue and Pressure
Putella’s failure no longer played a major role, the Spaniards were almost two legs in the final at that time. But much earlier in the game, her teammate Mariona Caldentey had shot a penalty and thus ensured that the favorites had significantly more problems with Switzerland than before.
Aitana Bonmati understood her teammates. “These are difficult moments, we have already played a lot of games and are tired”said the two-time world footballer in the Sportschau interview. In addition, there is the pressure from the opposing fans.
ARD expert Schult: “I wouldn’t generalize that”
In any case, the two Spaniards lined up in a long list of malfunctions at the European Championship 2025. 13 out of 25 attempts have so far not led to the goal. Conversely, it means: less than half – more precisely: only 48 percent – went in. A value that significantly deviates from the normal level. Because actually the slightly fluctuating value for a transformed penalty is between 75 and 80 percent.
It is striking how many penalties are shot.
Sportschau expert Almuth Schult warns against generalizing the negative value of the EM 2025. “I wouldn’t generalize that in women’s football”said the 34 -year -old – but admitted at the same time: “It is striking how many penalties are shot.”
In the past, it was further, it was different. “We have already seen tournaments where not a single one was held up to the eighth penalty.”
But why is the accumulation of failed attempts at the tournament in Switzerland? The former keeper has an explanatory approach: “The goalkeepers are waiting for a very long time and make it so difficult for the shooters to look out“, said the ARD expert. However, she was surprised by Putella’s penalty. “A world footballer would expect that she would not shoot so goalkeeper -friendly”said Schult.
Norway star Hegerberg also failed twice from the point
Putellas and Co. are in the best company. At Norway, for example, the experienced top striker Ada Hegerberg failed twice from the point, among other things in the round of the last eight at the European Championship out of the Scandinavians against Italy (1: 2).
The quarter -finals between England and Sweden, which ended 3-2 for the British, even went down in the history books: because of 14 penalties, only five found their way into the goal – a whole nine were shot. That had never been done with a football European Championships of the women before.
Twelve of the 13 failed tests in the quarter -finals
The fact is: Twelve of the 13 previous failed attempts at the EM 2025 were in the quarter -finals, for the group phase only Hegerberg’s failed attempt against Switzerland (2-1) is noted. This suggests that the pressure of the KO round plays an important role.
For Germany, however, which is always in the reputation of nerve strength at penalty, there has been a penalty at the European Championship 2025 – and this also went in: Sjoeke Nüsken converted in 2-1 against Denmark.
At the DFB team, you don’t just feel prepared in terms of penalty before the quarter-finals. “We have already started this topic in Herzogenaurach”said national coach Christian Wück before the duel with France (Saturday, from 9 p.m. live in the ticker and audio stream on sportschau.de). “We kept streaking it. So I think we are well prepared.”
Running or trend?
However, Giulia Gwinn is usually missing as the safest shooter – and opponent France has also been twice in two attempts and is still without a mistake. The German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger is considered a “penalty killer”.
Either way, it remains exciting whether the quarter -finals are just a strange and remarkable outlier. Or may even be a negative trend.
