Women’s DFB Cup: Popp shoots Wolfsburg into the round of 16

Thanks to the accuracy of his national team striker Alexandra Popp, the German soccer champions VfL Wolfsburg made it through to the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.

A week before the start of the Bundesliga, the selection captain scored four goals in the final safe 8:2 (3:1) victory of the cup defenders at second division FSV Gütersloh. The other Wolfsburg goals came from Jill Roord, Dominique Janssen, Lynn Willms and Ewa Pajor. Gütersloh had taken a 1-0 lead through Jacqueline Baumgärtel, Ronja Leubner had meanwhile reduced the lead to 2:3 for the second division team.

Favorites prevail

Most of the other teams in the Bundesliga survived the second round of the cup without any problems. Eintracht Frankfurt won 7-0 (3-0) at regional league club SV Weinberg, 1. FC Köln outclassed hosts SV Elversberg from the regional league 8-0 (3-0), also thanks to a hat-trick by Mandy Islacker.

Only Freiburg and Potsdam have to tremble

SGS Essen also celebrated superior successes with 6:1 (2:1) at ATS Buntentor, MSV Duisburg with 5:0 (2:0) at Magdeburger FFC, Bayer Leverkusen with 4:1 (2:0) at TSV Jahn Calden , Werder Bremen 3-0 (1-0) at SV Henstedt-Ulzburg and TSG Hoffenheim 7-1 (3-0) at 1. FC Saarbrücken. Only SC Freiburg only managed to win 3:2 (1:1, 0:0) at second division club SG Andernach after extra time, while Turbine Potsdam only won 3:2 on penalties (2:0/3:3/4: 4) at FC Viktoria 1889 Berlin from the Regionalliga Nordost.

FC Bayern Munich only plays at FC Ingolstadt this Monday (September 12th, 2022).
