Women’s Bundesliga: MSV wakes up too late – SGS Essen wins Revierderby

As of: October 16, 2023 9:27 p.m

SGS Essen deservedly won the Revierderby at MSV Duisburg on matchday 4 in the women’s Bundesliga. MSV only played in their own stadium from the second half.

Essen won 1-0 (1-0) in Duisburg on Monday evening (October 16, 2023) and thus celebrated their second win of the season. Annalena Rieke scored the goal of the day in the 40th minute. The SGS has now climbed into the middle of the table with six points and is therefore fully on target. MSV, on the other hand, remains at just one point and occupies a relegation spot.

Essen took control of the game from the start and should have taken the lead after less than two minutes. Jacqueline Meißner was completely free in the penalty area after a cross from the right side, but shot the ball about a meter over the goal with her weaker right foot.

Meier heads the post

It was even closer in the 11th minute: MSV goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic came out of her box too late on a cross, Ramona Meier headed towards the empty goal, but only hit the post.

The MSV limited itself exclusively to defending against the still dominant SGS, but did it well. The Duisburg women won the majority of the duels and allowed Essen hardly any shots after hitting the post.

Rieke scores from a corner

Almost logically, it was a standard that ultimately led to Essen’s well-deserved lead. Annalena Rieke headed a corner from Natasha Kowalski from five meters into the bottom right corner in the 40th minute. Duisburg’s Kaitlyn Parcell still had the ball on the line, but couldn’t do anything.

After the break, MSV showed a different face. The Duisburg women acted much more courageously and offensively. And just six minutes after the restart it was almost 1-1. Antonia-Johanna Halverkamps actually wanted to cross from the half field into the middle. However, the ball slipped from her foot, causing it to become longer and longer and ultimately crash into the crossbar (51′).

Purtscheller checks Mahmutovic

The SGS needed a few minutes to prepare for the offensive MSV. It took until the 62nd minute for Essen’s next chance. Lilli Purtscheller shot from 16 meters, MSV goalkeeper Mahmutovic was on the post.

From then on it was a balanced game, but most of the action took place between the penalty areas. In the final phase the SGS had another chance. Ramona Maier missed her best opportunity in the 85th minute when she put the ball just past the left post from the right side. However, the Essenes’ victory was no longer in danger.

SGS Essen continues next Saturday (2 p.m.) with a home game against Werder Bremen. The MSV Duisburg will be a guest at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday (4 p.m.).
