Sophie Nachtigall SC Freiburg, Lara Schenk FC Carl Zeiss Jena and Alena Bienz SC Freiburg fight for the ball

As of: May 3, 2026 • 6:37 p.m

The footballers of FC Carl Zeiss Jena have to say goodbye to the Bundesliga. On Sunday, Florian Kästner’s team clearly lost to SC Freiburg – and can no longer be saved two match days before the end of the season.

The footballers from FC Carl Zeiss Jena are relegated from the Bundesliga. The last theoretical chance to stay in the league was missed in the game against SC Freiburg. The Thuringians clearly lost the home game on Sunday with 1:5 (0:3). Svenja Fölmli (1st), Lisa Kolb (34th) and Ingibjörg Siguroardottir (42nd) scored for the Breisgau women before the break. In the second half, Sophie Nachtigall (62nd) and again Fölmli (87th) scored further SC goals. Isabell Jaron (63′) scored the consolation goal for Jena. Jena was promoted to the Bundesliga two years ago.

Lightning residue for FC Carl Zeiss

After just 38 seconds, the Jena team’s last hope was effectively extinguished when they conceded their first goal. The team then played bravely forward and had good chances of equalizing through Olivia Alcaide (13th) and Noemi Genitile (19th). The 0:2 steered the game clearly towards Freiburg. The 0:3 looked very suspicious. The hosts never gave up and fought until the final whistle. However, the means of the Thuringians were limited.

Only two threes this season

Jena didn’t manage a home win all season and only won twice anyway. There were only three points out of a possible 18 against the relegation rivals. It is the fourth relegation in Jena’s Bundesliga history.
