Bayer Leverkusen started the new year with a win in the women’s Bundesliga. In the catch-up game on matchday 1 at SC Freiburg, the decision was made in the second round.

Selina Ostermeier (56′) and Kristin Kogel (70′) ensured the 2-1 (0-0) win in Breisgau after several missed opportunities for the “Werkself”, with Svenja Fölmli (90’+1) scoring the next goal late. As a result, Leverkusen, like league leaders Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern Munich in second place, have 29 points on their account, but are still in the chasing role due to the poorer goal difference. The Leverkusen team can change that next Friday (January 31, 2025) when the top game takes place in Frankfurt.

Freiburg has to be demolished

Freiburg had already lost to Bayer with the same result in the last game before the winter break – as a result, the sports club lost touch with the top of the table. With 20 points, coach Theresa Merk’s team leads the rest of the league behind the top teams Frankfurt, Bayern, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg (28 points).

In another catch-up game from the eleventh matchday, Carl-Zeiss Jena will also face TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday. The hosts, currently second to last with three points, are trying to get their first win in the twelfth game.
