Women are in the majority in only seven municipal councils: that’s how it is in Zoetermeer

The number of municipal councils in which women are in the majority? They can be counted on two hands. The Stem op een Vrouw foundation has mapped this out together with Local Focus. But despite the fact that there are more men in the Zoetermeer city council, our ladies do score higher than the national average.

In seven of the more than three hundred Dutch municipalities, the majority of councilors are women. This concerns Amsterdam, Dijk en Waard, Wageningen, Baarle-Nassau, Schiermonnikoog, Zoeterwoude and Blaricum. In all other municipalities in the Netherlands, men are in the majority.

Fewer women than before

Nationally, 31 percent of municipal councilors are currently women. According to the Stem op een Vrouw foundation, this is lower than just after the 2018 municipal elections: then it was still 34 percent.
