The court of assize in Nivelles in Wallonia has sentenced Caroline Boreux to 27 years in prison on Friday evening. Boreux was found guilty of the murder of her six-year-old daughter on March 1, 2019 in Mont-Saint-Guibert.
After the verdict, the prosecutor’s office requested the immediate arrest of the accused. The woman currently has an electronic ankle bracelet, and the prosecutor’s office is concerned that she will flee abroad or take an act of desperation. But the court did not answer the question.
The court had demanded life imprisonment, but certainly no less than 27 years in prison. The defense asked for punishment with a view to a future between 15 and 20 years.
To motivate the level of the sentence, the court referred, among other things, to the extreme seriousness of the facts, the vulnerability of the young victim and her relationship with the accused. The court found one mitigating circumstance: that the woman had no criminal record.
Facts always denied
The accused has always denied the facts, alleging that three armed and masked men attacked her daughter in her apartment. They allegedly drugged her and then violently threw her into a bath full of water. The woman claims that she woke up in the bath with her clothes on. She found her daughter unconscious in the living room and performed another chest compressions, after which she called 911. The girl appeared to have been strangled.
In her last word Friday afternoon, Boreux once again reiterated her innocence before the jury backed out. The jury noted in its guilty verdict that there was a combination of serious, precise and consistent presumptions and found the accused guilty beyond all reasonable doubt.
The judgment pointed to numerous inconsistencies and contradictions in the accused’s version to support the experts’ doubts about her amnesia. The court endorsed the conclusions of these professionals: denial is a means for the accused to safeguard her mental integrity.
