The Russian woman was found guilty of handing over a figurine packed with explosives to blogger Vladlen Tatarski at an event in April 2023. The explosion killed Tatarski (real name: Maxim Fomin) and injured more than 50 people in a cafe. Trepova herself was unharmed.

The court convicted her of a terrorist attack, unauthorized possession of explosives and forgery, Russian news agencies said. The public prosecutor had demanded 28 years in prison. An accomplice who sheltered her for a short time was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison.

Tatarsky was a well-known supporter of the war against Ukraine. His death caused an outcry, as did the murder of Daria Dugina, the daughter of ultranationalist mastermind Alexander Dugin, in 2022.

According to Russian justice, the masterminds are behind the attack on Tatarsky in Ukraine. Among them was a Russian journalist who was formerly a member of the banned National Bolshevik Party in Russia.

Trepova largely confirmed what happened during the trial, but emphasized in her closing statement that she knew nothing about the explosives in the statue. “I’m sorry I didn’t pick up the statue on the way (the river, ed.) threw the Neva,” she said, according to independent news portal Mediazona.
