At the beginning of March, Dieter Hecking took over as coach of the ultimately failed mission to stay in the league at VfL Wolfsburg. The Wolves have not had a nominal sports director since then. Hecking could now move into the position for the restart in the 2nd Bundesliga. However, he recently expressed his openness to another coaching job – probably somewhere else.
On Wednesday, the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung” and the “Kicker” reported that Hecking might soon move to management at VfL. Hecking is said to be the most obvious candidate to succeed Peter Christiansen, who had to resign in March. Also recently traded solutions were the former VfL icon Marcel Schäfer (RB Leipzig) and Fabian Wohlgemuth from VfB Stuttgart. There should be no chance for Wolfsburg in either case. Those responsible in Wolfsburg appreciate Hecking’s clear communication. Another argument in favor of a promotion is that he was the sports director of 1. FC Nürnberg from 2020 to 2024 and therefore knows the 2nd Bundesliga well.

On Wednesday, Wolfsburg officially confirmed the first departures after the season. What will happen next at VfL still seems to be completely open. Compared to other relegated teams, the consequences are at least financially limited, even if the budget is of course significantly reduced. But the Volkswagen Group has already made it clear that it will continue to provide generous support to VfL Wolfsburg Fußball GmbH.
