Wladimir Klitschko: We can’t defend Ukraine with our fists

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – Former boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko has urgently called for further international arms deliveries for Ukraine, which is being attacked by Russia. “We need weapons. We cannot defend our country with our fists,” Klitschko told ABC television on Sunday. His brother Vitali is mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Ukraine does not expect other armies on its soil, Klitschko said. “We will take care of ourselves and defend our homeland, we only need these weapons for that.” It is also important to further isolate Russia economically and impose sanctions on it. “Every cent that Russia gets they use for weapons to kill us Ukrainians,” he said.

Wladimir Klitschko had previously asked Ukrainians living in Germany and German supporters for help. “Everybody put pressure on the German government. We need an embargo on oil and gas from Russia now. We need more weapons now. Here in Ukraine, every hour, every minute counts.” He further said: “It is so important that you continue. That you help that the people affected by this brutal war are not forgotten.”/jac/DP/he
