The Romanian police are looking for Wiz Khalifa for cannabis – at the same time his mixtape “blog era boyz” with MGK is released. A real satire in nine tracks.
While the Romanian police are looking for Wiz Khalifa, the rapper continues to diligently distribute smoke signals – but this time of a legal nature: Together with Machine Gun Kelly, the 38-year-old released the mixtape “blog era boyz” this Friday. Nine tracks, soaked in nostalgia and, you guessed it, in exactly the same substance that just got him on a wanted list in Romania. Track six has the simply programmatic title “stoned”; The accompanying line “I like being stoned” quickly turns the subtext into the text.
Real satire with timing
There’s something comedic about the timing. A man is serving a nine-month prison sentence on the Black Sea coast for 18.53 grams of cannabis – and at the same hour the same man is singing about the good old days with MGK. As is so often the case, real satire writes itself. What makes it particularly spicy is that the Romanian appeals court increased the original fine precisely because Khalifa had sent a “message of normalization” of illegal behavior. Maybe they just got the wrong mixtape in Constanța.
Nostalgia from the early 2010s
In terms of content, “blog era boyz” is a journey back to the early 2010s. The two first teamed up in 2013 on “Mind of a Stoner” – a title that seems almost prophetic in light of the current Romanian legal situation. Over a decade later, they pick up right there: relaxed, melodic rap music, somewhere between Wiz’s West Coast sleepiness and MGK’s rock-savvy energy. The singles “girl next door” and the riot track “everything tatted” were released in advance.
The mixtape is not released in a vacuum, but in the middle of the joint tour: Khalifa accompanies MGK as a co-headliner on the North American leg of his “Lost Americana” tour, which runs until the beginning of July. Fresh songs for the setlist – an understandable move.
Manhunt, festivals and open questions
The question raised by the manhunt remains open: Khalifa has been on the Romanian police list since May 20, complete with passport photo and warrant. If he travels to an EU country, Romania could obtain a European arrest warrant. Ironically, he is scheduled to be a headliner at the Openair Frauenfeld and at the Norwegian Slottsfjell Festival this summer – territory close to Schengen where such an arrest warrant could theoretically take effect. It remains unclear whether he will keep the appointments. After the incident in 2024, he remained remorseful and promised that it would not happen again. The mixtape suggests: The topic is not over yet. But nobody expected that from Wiz Khalifa.
