With these tips from car mechanic Steven you drive more economically and safer

You may not think about it very often, but your tires have a major influence on how economically and safely you drive. Spring is a good time to take a closer look. But what do you pay attention to? Steven Grootveld, workshop manager at Van der Linden Groep, gives tips.

Tip 1: Switch on time

Now that spring has arrived, Steven’s most important tip is: don’t drive with winter tires if you have them. “On time one schedule tire change is necessity. Winter tires provide more grip at temperatures below seven degrees, but once the temperature rises, that advantage is lost and they wear out much faster than summer tires. You will then have to replace your tires sooner.”

Tip 2: Check the voltage

You may be familiar with tip two, but according to Steven, it cannot be emphasized often enough: check the tire pressure every two months. “It’s a super easy way to make your tires last longer and save on fuel costs. You can find how high the voltage should be in the manual of your car, but sometimes also on a sticker on the door. Always check the pressure with cold tires if you have only driven a few kilometers. Never rely on what you see. A tire may look hard, but it isn’t.”

Tip 3: Never ignore the warning light

New cars often have an electronic tire pressure gauge. Does that warning light come on? Do not wait to check tire pressure. Your tire does not have to be flat, but it may be that your car steers less well. In addition, you can be held liable in the event of an accident if you ignore such a warning.

Tip 4: Come by for a free check

Steven also recommends making an appointment for a free tire check. Then, in addition to the tire pressure, the profile depth is also taken into account. “The legal minimum depth is 1.6 millimeters, but it is not smart to wait until that point. We recommend replacing a tire from 2.5 millimeters.”
