As the Tagesschau reports, flight prices in June were significantly higher than three years ago, i.e. before the pandemic: it was around 71 percent more to Alicante, 61 percent to Mallorca and around 41 percent to Faro. One reason for this: Kerosene prices are rising.
Seven apps for airfare comparison tested by the German Institute for Service Quality
In order not to get lost for hours in extensive price comparisons on the websites of various airlines, many travelers use the apps of airfare comparison services. Some of them have a significantly higher utility value than others, and the ease of use also differs greatly. The German Institute for Service Quality found this out in a test of seven popular comparison portals. The apps were rated on a scale from zero to one hundred points using 35 observations by trained users and a total of 14 utility analyses.

momondo was able to convince the most with a score of 82.9 points and the rating “very good”. The app performed very well both in terms of user-friendliness and utility value analysis, and the German Institute also mentions an appealing design, customer-friendly access to the app, helpful filters (such as “flexible date” or “forklift flights”) and corona travel tips for service quality as special plus points.
KAYAK came in second with 82.4 points and a rating of “very good”. The app has “needs-based functions”, presents the content extensively and in a way that is easy to understand and has customer-friendly additional functions such as a price calendar, aircraft status information or online baggage measurement.
The SWOODOO app was also rated “very good” with 81.1 points and, with the third highest level of user-friendliness, an attractive design, a customer-friendly introduction to the app, numerous filters and sorting features and an alarm function that informs about special offers informed with their own search, convince.
Airfare apps take the hassle out of searching
But the German Institute for Service Quality also writes about the four other apps tested: “The flight price apps offer those who want to travel the best services by making the tedious search and comparison on countless airline websites and in online travel agencies superfluous.” All apps only show connections that match the search criteria and also have a function for sharing information, such as via WhatsApp. The other apps are checkfelix (81.0 points, “very good”), Skyscanner (72.5 points, “good”), Idealo Flug (64.6 points, “satisfactory”) and Jetcost (56, 2 points, “sufficient”). Only apps that are available for users of Android and Apple devices were tested.
It is striking that the first four places in the ranking of the German Institute for Service Quality are apps from the provider KAYAK – apparently the features of this provider are particularly well received.
In the Google ratings, Skyscanner secures first place with 4.5 stars
In fact, not all users of the apps agree with the ranking: In the Google ratings, Skyscanner comes out best with 4.5 stars from a good 793,800 ratings, followed by Jetcost (4.3 stars from around 24,400 ratings) and KAYAK ( 4.1 stars with a good 250,400 ratings). momondo – in first place in the ranking of the German Institute for Service Quality – does not make it onto the podium on Google with 4.1 stars from around 50,400 reviews, but is in fourth place.
In any case, the apps seem to make the search for a relatively cheap flight much easier. Anyone who pays particular attention to the budget could still benefit from going to a travel agency: Because there, pre-booked, particularly cheap contingent flights from tour operators without a hotel can also be sold to individual travelers – this is forbidden on the Internet, explains the Tagesschau.
