“Like every week, I had to place orders on Monday for what I needed. And suddenly he said, it’s the last time. That was strange; I was still shocked by it,” says Christiane.

Christiane started her business in 1970. Before that she helped her father. “My father still had cows, I always had to help with the milking, but he sold them in 1969, after which I started the shop a year later.”

The shelves in the store in Merkem are now almost empty, Christiane has never had a computer and is therefore not keen on electronic invoicing. That makes today her last day at work. “It’s strange. Two more people have come in. But that won’t last. I’ll leave my door open, maybe someone else will come.”
