Huys and Warnez’s CD&V WZR-RKD party won an absolute majority in the recent municipal elections. Brecht Warnez then lost 143 votes to Lieven Huys, who would become mayor. But at the request of the party itself, all votes had to be recounted. Due to an error, the ballots of 735 residents were not included. After the recount, it appears that Brecht Warnez still received the most preferential votes and is therefore entitled to the mayor’s sash. He received 39 votes more than Huys.
By mutual agreement, Warnez will not take up office until June 1, 2028. Until then, Lieven Huys will wear the mayor’s sash and Warnez will remain alderman. In addition, Ann Mesure, Tom Braet, Jens Danneels, Sandra Ketels, Greet De Roo-Coens, Yves Bracke and Linda Wyckstandt will also become aldermen in the new merged municipality.
