Florian Wirtz outshines Woltemade in the duel of the DFB stars
January 31, 2026 – 11:07 p.mReading time: 2 minutes

Florian Wirtz shows his next top performance for Liverpool FC. Nick Woltemade sits on the bench at Newcastle for a long time and sees how a former Bundesliga goalscorer shines.
Florian Wirtz helped Liverpool FC to an important 4-1 win against Newcastle United with a brilliant performance. The German international turned things around from a 1-0 deficit with a spectacular assist and later scored himself, while his teammate Hugo Ekitiké scored a brace.
The game at Anfield Road started with advantages for Newcastle, who started with national player Malick Thiaw in the starting line-up. After Lewis Hall hit the post, Anthony Gordon gave the visitors the lead in the 36th minute with a low shot into the left corner.
Liverpool were unimpressed. Wirtz initiated the turnaround with a brilliant individual action: the 22-year-old dribbled past two opponents in the penalty area and fed Ekitiké perfectly to make it 1-1. Just 138 seconds later, the Frenchman left Thiaw standing and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead.
The offensive spectacle continued after the break. Ekitiké missed his hat-trick while Barnes failed to equalize at the other end. In the 67th minute, after an assist from Mohamed Salah, Wirtz made it 3-1 with a well-considered shot from 14 meters. Konaté eliminated the last doubts in stoppage time with a 4-1 win.
For Wirtz, the strong performance means a continuation of his upward trend. After a weak start to the season, he now has 14 goal involvements in all competitions. The evening was less pleasant for national team colleague Nick Woltemade, who only came on in the 73rd minute and has remained goalless for eleven games.
With this success, Liverpool, fifth in the table, strengthens its claim to the Champions League places.
