The Liverpool FC is still in crisis mode. At Chelsea FC, the “Reds” lose deep in added time, and Florian Wirtz cannot help as a substitute either.
After the 1-2 at Crystal Palace and the 0: 1 in the Champions League at Galatasaray Istanbul, the “Reds” were subject to 1: 2 (0: 1) at FC Chelsea on Saturday (04.10.2025). Substitute Brazilian teenager Estevao (90.+6) made the decision shortly before the final whistle. In the following jubilee, the previously warned Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca saw the yellow-red card.
Cody Gakpo (63.) equalized the early tour of Moises Caicedo (14th) in halftime. Florian Wirtz initially sat on the bench and only came to the second round. He couldn’t take care of a correct turn either. Due to the defeat, Liverpool had to cede the lead to FC Arsenal (2-0 against West Ham United).
Liverpool susceptible and without sustainable pressure
At the Stamford Bridge, LFC coach Arne Slot initially gave the recently crisis Wirtz a break. Dominik Szoboszlai began for the German record transfer. And the guests started in the west of London with a lot of pressure and a dominant phase. However, FC Chelsea used the first inattentiveness to lead.
The hosts had too much space in the center. Caicedo was able to walk freely over 30 meters from the midfield to the penalty area, was still not attacked and hammered the ball into the goal at the top left of the 1-0.
Liverpool had the chance to equalize through Szoboszlai (19th) shortly afterwards – but that was almost from the “Reds” in the first round. Chelsea cut off the center and pass paths well on the outside and took Liverpool any dynamics. The “blues” did not tore out trees offensive, but still had a good chance of shooting through Alejandro Garnacho (39.).
Wirtz immediately with a template
At the second half, Wirtz came for Conor Bradley – and conjured up the first action after 20 seconds. At the penalty area, he extended a sharp gakpo pass from the left in a rotation with the hoe further to the right into the barrel of Mohamed Salah, which then finished on the right with his end. But it was the signal for a Liverpool printing phase.
Ryan Gravenberch (51st) shot from 20 meters exactly on Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Only seconds later Salah (53.) aimed after a solo. It was more pressure on the “Reds” kettle and after 63 minutes when Alexander Isak elegantly placed a flank from the air in the five in front of Gakpo and the Dutch scored the 1-1.
The final phase belongs again to Chelsea
The next few minutes belonged to Liverpool, but Chelsea caught again. The game became more open, but the forces and thus the precision also subsided. Chelsea had a good chance through the substitute ex-dortmund Jamie Gitten (81st). After that, Becker representative Giorgi Marmadashvili was in the focus twice at Liverpool.
Szoboszlai put a Liverpool degree past the gate left (90th). In added time, a header from Chelseas Enzo Fernandez (90.+1) hit the post. And with the last action of the game, the “blues” actually hit. Marc Cucurella loosened perfectly in the penalty area and put Klug across the second post, where 18-year-old Estevao slipped the ball over the line before Andy Robertson.
During the international break, Liverpool coach Arne Slot will not be able to work great on improvements with a small training group. And after the interruption it will not be easier either: On Sunday (October 19, 2025, 5.30 p.m.) Archrival Manchester United will come to the Anfield Road. Either it will be exactly the right or exactly the wrong game for Liverpool and Wirtz to leave crisis mode.
