Anyone who can ever be found in the city center of Breda could not ignore Wique. The man with the long dreads died. Wique lived in his own way, sometimes also in his own reality, and thus hit the hearts of many.
The Social Care Foundation in Breda (SMO Breda) announces its death on Monday.
According to them in Memoriam, Wique had had psychological problems for a long time. In a special way, he nevertheless always managed to make contact with other residents of the city, or with passers -by. That gave him great fame. Since 2024 he was sick and it was decided at the end of the year that the medical world could not mean much to him anymore.
SMO says: “From that moment on, the care focused entirely on comfort, warmth and humanity.” According to the foundation, he spent his last months in a familiar environment, surrounded by people who understood and respected him as he was.
Value for the city
When Wique was sick, he made a trip with a companion one more time. That made a deep impression: “The owner of the spring pia window at the Spanjaardsgat burst out in tears when she saw Wique,” says SMO in a public farewell letter. “She hadn’t seen him for a long time and worried.” It shows how much the famous Bredanaar was loved in the city.
SMO Breda considered the death of Wique on Monday. “Not because he was famous, but because he showed us what humanity is. How, even with psychological problems and a different view of the world, you can be invaluable for a community.”
