Winter Sports: Silver and Bronze for Skeletonis

The German Skeletonis won two medals at the European Championships in St. Moritz. The women got nothing. But Hannah Neise at least bought the Olympic ticket.

Behind the victorious Martins Dukurs from Latvia, Alexander Gassner from Winterberg and world champion Christopher Grotheer from BRC Thuringia came in second and third.

Axel Jungk from BSC Sachsen Oberbärenburg, who slipped at the start in the second run, completed the good German performance in the parallel World Cup race with fourth place in the European Championship and World Cup rankings.

Dukurs also got the crystal globe in the overall World Cup with his third win of the season. Jungk was second ahead of Grotheer. Gassner, who achieved his best result of the season with the first podium on Friday in Engadin, Switzerland, finished sixth overall.

Neise is EM fourth

Among the women, only Neise from Winterberg was happy about fourth place at the European Championships and eighth place in the World Cup. Because that meant the Olympic qualification. World champion Tina Hermann finished tenth in the World Cup and was fifth at the European Championships. She already had the Beijing ticket for sure.

Jacqueline Lölling from RSG Hochsauerland missed the internal association requirements with twelfth place and seventh place at the European Championships and now has to hope for a special permit for the Olympics. Head coach Christian Baude will propose them to the DOSB. “After the good results in the test race in Beijing, we will submit the application and hope that we can take ‘Jacka’ with us,” said Baude.

Kimberley Bos from the Netherlands became European champion and overall World Cup winner, coming in second overall. The Australian Jaclyn Narracott won the World Cup with a time of 1:08.72 minutes in the first race.

The only natural ice rink in the world in the Engadin is rebuilt every year at the end of November by a team of specialists from 10,000 cubic meters of snow and 5000 cubic meters of water over a length of 1722 meters in just three weeks. Therefore, there are no track records, only best times of the season.
