Berlin (AP) – Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) once again recognized the achievements of the German athletes at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

“The Chancellor congratulates everyone who has fulfilled their dream of a medal, a good placement or a new personal best,” said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit. With a view to twelve gold, ten silver and five bronze medals, he spoke of a “very good second place in the medal table”.

The day before, Scholz had congratulated the German Olympic team on Twitter for “impressive achievements” and “great moments”. Hebestreit also promised the German medal winners a personal letter of congratulations from the chancellor. Like all other members of the federal government, Scholz had refrained from traveling to the competitions in China.
