The next major update for Windows 11, known as version 26H2 or the 2026 Update, is poised to address several critical areas of concern. On July 18 and 19, Microsoft released the out-of-band update KB5121767, which addresses a conflict between the Intel Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) driver and the Windows USB-C connection manager. Affected models include several Dell devices, such as the Pro Max 14 and 16, the Precision series (5470 to 5490), and the XPS 17 (9720 and 9730). Users reported severe performance drops, overheating, unexpected crashes, and rapid battery drain. While the update installs automatically, Microsoft advises that it should only be applied to those experiencing related symptoms.
Cloud Recovery and Automatic Restore Points
Microsoft is introducing two new recovery tools for system restoration. As of July 18, an automatic time-based restore point feature is in testing. It utilizes the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and creates a restore point every 24 hours. However, this feature is only enabled by default on systems with more than 200GB of storage on the main partition; users with smaller SSDs will need to activate it manually.
The day following, on July 19, testing began for a cloud reinstallation for insiders. This feature allows the operating system to be directly reinstalled from the cloud using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), eliminating the need for a USB stick as required drivers will be automatically sourced via Windows Update.

However, not everything is running smoothly. On July 17, Microsoft acknowledged service problems with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Since July 13, users experienced synchronization timeouts and extended processing times due to a backlog of release metadata.
Furthermore, in a significant move for enterprises, Microsoft will enable Copilot features by default in all versions of Outlook by the end of 2026, including in the classic desktop client.
