Ariel the Mermaid is back! The live-action film adaptation of the cartoon classic about one of the most iconic film characters of all time will start in German cinemas on May 25th. And with a bit of luck, you’ll be there before the premiere!
In the US, it’s a much-discussed re-imagining of Arielle. Why? The little mermaid now has black skin tone. She is portrayed by singer and actress Halle Bailey (“Grown-ish”).
But we are not interested in whether she is white or black, but what happens: Ariel, the youngest and most headstrong daughter of King Triton, longs to learn more about the world beyond the sea and falls in love with him during a visit to the surface attractive Prince Erik. Although mermaids are forbidden from associating with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a pact with the evil sea witch Ursula. Although this gives her the chance to experience life on land, it ultimately puts her life – and her father’s crown – in danger.
