In London never so many Italian tennis players ahead in the men’s scoreboard: after the record of 1949

A record Italy in Wimbledon in the male singular. An Italy that perhaps does not expect and that places five blues as many as in the third round of the Championships, never happened in history. The previous primacy was dated even 1949, 76 years ago: it was not yet Open and it was a Wimbledon that was painstakingly taking up for the war. The protagonists of the time were Vanni Canepele, Marcello Del Bello, Rolando del Bello and Gianni Cucelli. Today, however, in the third round we find the number one in the world Jannik Sinner, Flavio Cobolli, Mattia Bellucci, Lorenzo Sonego and Luciano Darderi. The South Tyrolean is obviously not a surprise and basically not even for Sonego, who also went further: round of 16 against Roger Federer in 2021, in the last game won by the Swiss in his glorious career. While for Bellucci, Darderi and Cobolli it is the first time ever in the third round of the English Slam.

Forecasts

And it may not be finished here: all the blues have in fact an affordable task and the eighth final dream is not forbidden. Sinner starts clearly favored against Pedro Martinez, Cobolli can play on par with Mensik, a 2005 class with great talent but with a few games played on this surface. Darderi does not start beaten against Jordan Thompson, back from two battles that may have taken away some energy to him. Bellucci certainly has a difficult opponent like Cameron Norrie, but far from his peak that had brought him to the semifinal to Wimbledon. Finally, Sonego will see it with Brandon Nakashima: for him too a difficult match, but the outcome will not be so obvious.
