Novak Djkokovic lives up to his role as favorite in the Wimbledon final and wins his 21st Grand Slam title against Nick Kyrgios.

Novak Djokovic won his 21st Grand Slam tennis title on the Wimbledon lawn. In the final on Sunday (07/10/2022), the Serb beat Nick Kyrgios (Australia) 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and 7: 6 (7: 3). “Novak played like a god at times”, Kyrgios admitted after the emotional and sometimes high-class match. He had fought vehemently against the defeat – but in the end even 30 aces didn’t help the Australian.

Djokovic is just one Grand Slam success behind Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who won his 22nd major title at the French Open but had to cancel the Wimbledon semi-final against Kyrgios due to an abdominal muscle injury.

Unbeaten on Center Court for nine years

For his fourth Wimbledon title in a row and the seventh overall, Djokovic needed 3:01 hours in the final. The third match ball brought Djokovic success. With seven victories in the classic lawn, Djokovic is only one title behind record champion Roger Federer (Switzerland). Djokovic has been unbeaten on Center Court in London since 2013.

“The title means a lot to me. Wimbledon has always been my favorite tournament”, said Djokovic. 27-year-old Kyrgios missed his first major title in his first Grand Slam final.

Last Grand Slam success this year?

It is questionable whether Djokovic can attempt the 22nd title at the US Open from the end of August. The 35-year-old still refuses a corona vaccination, which is currently mandatory for professionals in New York. Djokovic had therefore already missed the Grand Slam tournament in Australia.
