Wimbledon, Cocciaretto beats Trevisan, ahead Raducanu and Jabeur

Good first for Elisabetta who tore a tired Trevisan and hit her first victory in a main draw Slam. Emma gives a joy to the audience of her, the Tunisian in the 2nd round

The Italian derby of the first day of Wimbledon 2022 is won by Elisabetta Cocciaretto, protagonist of a remarkable match against Martina Trevisan, semifinalist of Roland Garros and seeded number 22. One-way match, a 6-2 6-0 in an hour and seven minutes, with very little to analyze from a strictly tennis point of view. Cocciaretto was superior in everything, with Trevisan who in all likelihood showed up unloaded after the splendid season on clay, culminating in the exploit in Paris, “paid” from a physical and perhaps mental point of view. That said, Tuscany is certainly not a Championships specialist, given that she has never won a match on these fields.

For Elizabeth, 21, 119 in the world, it is the first affirmation of the year and the first ever in a main slam draw, and at Wimbledon she had never even played a first round, which instead she had already done in Australia and at Roland Garros. Nothing to do for the other Italian on the field on this first day, Lucia Bronzetti, who lost (badly) against the American Li: 6-4 6-1 the result. Also for the world number 73, this was the first match in the main Wimbledon draw. The rest of the London women’s scoreboard has not seen, at least until now, major shocks.

Raducanu is there

Emma Raducanu, number 10 of the seeding, opened her adventure on the Centrale with an unexpected victory against Alison Van Uytvanck, and a good victory too, in two sets. This time the winner of the US Open has withstood her pressure very well, and the English are in awe of her. The US Open champion, on the other hand, won a very important first set 6-4 6-4 where she initially resisted the Belgian’s attacks to make a first shot with the 4-4 break. In the second, however, van Uytvanck had a better start, moving up 3-1, but she couldn’t build much from there and she lost five of the next six games. Also good ons Jabeur, seeded number 3, who made his debut on Field 1 but as number 2 in the WTA ranking, becoming the best African tennis player in history after overcoming the South African Amanda Coetzer, who at most had reached the third position. For her an easy match against the Swedish qualifier Mirjan Bjorklund, also known for being Denis Shapovalov’s girlfriend, but she needed to give a signal above all to herself after the Paris disaster. She did it, winning 6-1 6-3. Seeding number 2 Anett Kontaveit, who got rid of Bernarda Pera 7-5 6-1, also passes to the second round.
