Willy van de Kerkhof World Cup medals go on sale

The World Cup medals of former international Willy van de Kerkhof are under hammer. The former PSV football player reached the final of the global football tournament twice with the Orange squad in Munich (1974) and Buenos Aires (1978). That always resulted in a silver award.

Willy and his twin brother René were selected for both World Cups. In Germany Willy was only a reserve on the bench. Four years later in Argentina he played every minute, as the only player together with Ruud Krol.

Both silver medals will be auctioned live on Thursday afternoon 23 June by Heritage Auctions Europe in IJsselstein. The auction company estimates the value of the rare medal of honor at a minimum of ten thousand euros each. Besides the two medals, Willy also gets rid of others. Including medals he won with PSV. Such as the European Cup-1 (1988), the UEFA Cup (1978) and a bronze medal from 1976 when the Dutch finished third at the European Football Championship.

The collection of the acclaimed midfielder also includes signed match shirts, pennants, trophies, PSV items, football souvenirs and other memorabilia. In 2004 the Brazilian world star Pelé selected the Helmond ‘vacuum cleaner’ in his international top 100 of the best football players of all time. And yes, this price will also be offered by the auctioneer.
