PSV cannot complain about this weekend’s draw against AZ. Club celebrities Willy and René van de Kerkhof noted this in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant. The brothers thought AZ was at least equal to PSV and they also thought the penalty that PSV received due to Ruben van Bommel’s handball was unjustified. “You can throw a ball into someone’s hand every match,” says René. “I think this was an apology from Mr. Makkelie.”

The former right winger is referring to the problems that PSV coach Peter Bosz has had in the past with referee Danny Makkelie. Rightly or wrongly: PSV grabbed a point at the last minute thanks to the penalty. The leader saw number two Ajax approach four points, but that does not make the brothers nervous. “Ajax has never made me nervous,” René grins. But he wasn’t happy with PSV either. “Tillman, Saibari, Lang, they all didn’t give in… Although AZ was also well organized in front of the box.”

“Van Bommel and Steijn would suit PSV.”

In the end, it may be called a small miracle that AZ did not leave Eindhoven with three points. “It’s unbelievable that Parrott doesn’t score,” says Willy. “We could all have taken that one chance.” According to the brothers, the best AZ player was Ruben van Bommel, who conceded the penalty. “He is strong, fast and scores easily,” says Willy. “I would like to see him in a PSV shirt again.” René agrees with him. “But he is still a bit inconsistent, scores eights and nines, but also sometimes a four or a five. Perhaps he should stay at AZ for a while.”

Van Bommel already played for PSV as a youth player, but, like his father Mark, he left Eindhoven in a not so pleasant way. “Mark and Ruben’s grandfather Bert van Marwijk were in my room Legend Lounge in the stadium. I think the old attitude has gone a bit and they would like to come to PSV again.” That should not hinder a possible return to PSV. And the brothers see another Premier League player who would suit PSV: “Sem Steijn from FC Twente. He would not be the first to come here from Twente. But for now we have plenty of good midfielders.”

“Revenge against Excelsior and PEC.”

Fortunately for PSV, the opportunity for revenge soon presents itself, because PSV will visit PEC Zwolle on Saturday afternoon and first division team Excelsior will come to Eindhoven for a cup match on Tuesday evening. “You have to take a match like that seriously,” says René, undoubtedly with the defeat he and Willy experienced against Wageningen in 1977 (1-6 loss) in mind. “It can be a very short route to a prize,” adds Willy. “Just draw a home game a few times and you’ll be in the final in no time.”
