Will Smith releases Oscar video: Enough regrets after “Oscar slap”?

Will Smith is making his debut with a video that directly alludes to his inglorious performance at last year’s Academy Awards. Or rather: He shows himself, but does not speak up. Smith silently presented his Oscar, which he won last year, on TikTok. However, the “Oscar swatter” was remembered more than his prize. He slapped Chris Rock when he made a botched joke about his wife’s baldness during the awards ceremony. Like the slap, Smith’s line “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth” still reverberates.

The slap in the face in check:

After the bell, the actor was back on stage at the event, this time scheduled – he picked up an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as the father of Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.

Despite all the apologies to Chris Rock, the Academy banned the 54-year-old from the next ten awards because of his behavior. Various film productions with him were stopped. When he appeared on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in September 2022, he tried to repair his damaged image.

The Oscar TikTok

Now Smith showed up with his trophy on TikTok. He was responding to a video of a young woman asking her audience to ask objects what they think about you, they could only think. She claims that when a person asks a question about an object, an answer intuitively comes to mind. It would make life “a lot more fun and interesting.” Smith listened to her explanation, then framed his Oscar, gave him a questioning look, and then looked back at the camera without saying a word.

Authentic or PR stunt?

Most of his followers took the TikTok video with humor and praised his self-mockery. “I love Will. He’s human, as are all of us,” one person wrote. For many users, the video is a testament to the fact that his “apology tour” is over – and they warmly welcomed him back.

Another speculated on Twitter that the action is a plan by his PR team to put Smith back in the spotlight. That could be over, because at the beginning of February it was announced that Sony had confirmed the film “Bad Boys 4”. There will also be a sequel to I Am Legend. Most recently, the slave drama “Emancipation” appeared on AppleTV+. The fact that Smith did not receive an Oscar nomination for this film was seen by industry experts as a punishment for Smith’s aggressive Oscar performance.
