Will Smith looks back on Oscar incident in ‘The Daily Show’: “This is not who I want to be” | Celebrities

CelebritiesWill Smith (54) is getting ready to reclaim his place in the spotlight. In recent months, the actor has already shared some online statements. On Monday, the Oscar winner made his appearance on ‘The Daily Show With Trevor Noah’. Smith was a guest to present his new film ‘Emancipation’, but Trevor Noah (38) himself of course couldn’t resist looking back at the now world-famous Oscar incident.

“That was a terrible night,” admits Will Smith frankly. The latter punched presenter Chris Rock in the face on stage at the Oscars. The incident was prompted by Rock’s comment about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife. “It’s all quite complicated, but the bottom line is I’m just freaked out. Although that obviously does not approve of my behavior.” He continues: “It was a mix of different things. I was that little boy who had to watch his father beat his mother, you know? All those things suddenly came up again in that moment. But that’s not who I want to be.”

Trevor Noah, the host of ‘The Daily Show,’ also gave his own take on what happened during the conversation. “I like to see Chris. He is my friend. And I love you too, but this is just too crazy for words. A lot of black people were like, ‘What’s Will doing now? What just happened?’ A lot of black people were like, ‘He needs to go to jail’.” He continues: “Some people have exaggerated and as a result certain people have done the opposite.”

Slavery

Will Smith then talks about what happened after the incident. “My nephew is nine years old. He really is such a sweet child,” said the American actor. “We came home. He had stayed awake especially to see his Uncle Will. At one point we are in the kitchen and he sits on my lap. He’s holding my Oscar when he suddenly asks, “Why did you hit that man, Uncle Will?” In addition, the actor also confirmed on the ‘Jake’s Takes’ YouTube channel that “the past few months have indeed been quite difficult.”

The American actor and talk show host also talked about ‘Emancipation’, Will Smith’s new film. It will be a historical film about slavery in which he plays the leading role. “American slavery is one of the most brutal aspects of human history,” said the Oscar winner. “It is difficult to understand this level of cruelty. My daughter asked me, “Daddy, are you really going to do another movie about slavery?” To which I said: Honey, I promise you. This is not a movie about slavery. This is a movie about freedom’.”

Emancipation will be available on Apple TV+ on December 9. In addition, the film will also be shown in a limited number of American cinemas from Friday.
