Wild pursuit of ‘smoking’ driver ends in Alkmaar residential area

Traffic officer Emiel from Alkmaar smelled the odor of cannabis yesterday morning and saw a man smoking cannabis behind the wheel. What followed was a chase on the A9, via the N242 past the AZ stadium, onto the Vondelstraat. Ultimately, the driver gets his car stuck in a residential area. “Stop, I’m tasering you,” the officer shouts, but the driver does not stop and decides to continue running.

Traffic officer Emiel tells NH that he smelled an odor of cannabis yesterday morning when he was driving his motorcycle on the A9. He looks for where it came from and sees a driver smoking cannabis behind the wheel. The officer signals the driver, but the man does not respond to the call. The driver wants to beat officer Emiel and takes the exit to the N242. The officer has already passed the exit, but turns his motorcycle and drives towards it via the central reservation.

The officer drives behind the car for a while and sees that the driver runs a red light at Kooimeerplein. In the meantime, the officer has called in colleagues, because he could use some help. “He probably hit something there, because his right tire was soft,” says officer Emiel. “He was probably driving between 70 and 80 kilometers per hour and knew somewhere that he was not going to make it.”

The chase continues along Vondelstraat and the driver decides to drive into a residential area. He crashes himself, stops the car, gets out and runs away. Meanwhile, the car rolls into a pole.

The traffic officer shared the images of the chase on Instagram. Text continues.

“Stop, stop or I will taser you,” officer Emiel shouts from the motorcycle. The man does not want to surrender to the police yet and continues to run, causing the officer to get off his motorcycle. He shouts a few more times for the man to stop, but he doesn’t listen. He jumps into the water, is met by the police on the other side and arrested.

Traffic officer Emiel posted the video on Instagram yesterday. He doesn’t always film his actions. “I just got a new camera,” he says. “To show people more about what a motorcycle officer does.” Emiel has now been an agent for 30 years, 20 of which on a motorcycle. He is not very impressed by such a chase. “It’s always a bit between exciting and fun, every chase is of course different.”

At the end of the video, officer Emiel announces that the car, which was not registered, has been seized. The driver no longer had a driver’s license after it had previously been declared invalid. “This also had to do with a drug incident in traffic,” says Emiel. After questioning at the station, the driver was allowed to return home.
