What a surprise: Matthijs van Nieuwkerk has suddenly secretly married his sweetheart Martha Riemsma. But what do we see in the paparazzi photos? “She’s wearing a turtleneck!”
Matthijs van Nieuwkerk has had a bad year professionally, but privately he is ending things very romantically. The presenter got married yesterday in complete secrecy. Well, only Story paparazzo Edwin Smulders knew about it. He traveled to The Hague, took the photos and gave Story a top scoop.
Wedding boat
Who is Matthijs married to? With Martha Riemsma, who recently became director of the ANP. “Edwin Smulders managed to take exclusive photos of the couple on the way to their ceremony,” said Story.
“The wedding ceremony, which was performed by Matthijs dear friend Bart Chabot, took place in the company of children, family and friends, after a joint lunch. Afterwards there was champagne and treats.”
Very informal
What is immediately noticeable about the photos (see below) is that Matthijs and Martha are dressed very casually. “At the request of the bridal couple, the ceremony was informal, and the guests were allowed to dress according to their own wishes.”
“Groom Matthijs chose dark blue with chic loafers, bride Martha was dressed entirely in cream white with beautiful trousers and a casual knitted sweater.”
Turtleneck
At the desk of Show news they find this quite unconventional. “As you can see, dressed very casually,” says Patty Brard.
Colleague Eline de Ruig: “Just nice with a turtleneck.”
Patty: “Yes! Totally delicious. He was wearing a suit and loafers like he always wears.”
Dyantha Brooks: “No hassle.”
Patty: “Yes, no hassle. Nice with the kids.”
Eline: “Nice and practical.”
Small circle
How was the ceremony? Patty: “They got married in a small circle in The Hague. They had a wonderful lunch together. Completely informal. Champagne. Married by Bart Chabot. That was striking for a while, because they were basically introduced to each other by Eus (makes a painful grimace, ed.) and that friendship has cooled off a bit.”
“The intention was that he would marry them and that did not happen anymore and that was done at the last minute by Bart Chabot.”
Not seen
Eline knows that Özcan Akyol was not at the wedding. “We didn’t see that either, did we, Eus…”
Patty: “No. In fact, he posted that he was abroad.”
Paparazzo Edwin Smulders was there. “I’ve known for a while that it was either today or yesterday. Well, it wasn’t yesterday, and this morning I went to The Hague very early. I didn’t know any other times, nothing, and very early Martha went to the hairdresser.”
Winter chic
Edwin saw all the preparations up close. “He walked away and came back with all his hair beautifully done a few hours later. Matthijs went to walk the dog and walked by again, but he didn’t see me in my car. Finally around one o’clock they came out with Martha’s sons and then they walked to the wedding location.”
“She wasn’t wearing a wedding dress. I think it was called winter chic. It was a bit drizzly, a bit rainy, but they were laughing and all in a good mood.”
