Wiegman named best coach in Europe | Football

Wiegman addressed the attendees via a video message: “Sorry that I can’t be there, but I feel very honored with this award. Thanks for voting. This award is for everyone who has contributed to the success of English women’s football.”

European champion

Wiegman guided England to the European title in his own country this summer. In the final, the Lionesses too strong for Germany. It was the second time in a row that Wiegman was crowned European champion. Five years ago, in 2017, the top coach also succeeded with the Orange Lionesses.

The winner of the prize was determined by a jury consisting of the trainers of the sixteen clubs from last season’s group stage in the Champions League, the sixteen national coaches from the last European Championship and a group of journalists.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (Germany) and Sonia Bompastor (Olympique Lyon) were nominated together with Wiegman.

Carlo Ancelottic

Italian Carlo Ancelotti received the men’s award. The coach won the Champions League with Real Madrid last season by beating Liverpool in the final.

Real striker Karim Benzema was named Footballer of the Year for his impressive contribution to that success. In the women’s race, that honor went to Alexia Putellas of Barcelona.
