Ex-Bundesliga professional Raphael Wicky is returning to the North American professional league MLS as a coach. The former professional soccer player from SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Sporting Kansas City with an option for a further season, as the MLS team announced.
From the end of 2019 to the end of September 2021, 48-year-old Wicky had already worked for Chicago Fire in the USA.
Kansas City has won the MLS title twice, most recently in 2013. Last year the team missed the playoffs and was the worst team in the Western Conference with 28 points from 34 games.
Wicky, who most recently coached the Young Boys from Bern in his home country of Switzerland, wants to lead the team to better results again in the season that begins on February 21st.
