The new design is intended to help animal species such as the Nordic Woelmuis, the Tapuit and the Blue Harrier. “We want to reduce the ecosystem to the sixties and seventies,” says forester Thomas van der Es. “Then those species were still common here. The blue harrier is now the rarest breeding bird in the Netherlands. There are only two breeding pairs, one of which is on Texel.”

Gray dune vegetation

Van der Es hopes for a gray dune vegetation with more herbs, which are now overgrown by grass and shrubs. “The gray dunes are not yet completely lost at this location, because you can see color palettes that are characteristic of gray dunes. They are important for mother -of -pearl butterflies, but also for iconic birds such as the Tapuit.”
