Why Preetz doesn’t like MSV Duisburg!

By Roberto Lamprecht

Will ex-manager Michael Preetz (56) return to the football stage at Hertha almost three years after his dismissal on January 24, 2021? Not at first.

According to BZ information, traditional club and third division team MSV Duisburg has been courting Preetz intensively for weeks. He is supposed to succeed sports director Ralf Heskamp (58), who had to vacate his post at the beginning of October.

Why Preetz of all people?

The successful center forward and national player (seven appearances, three goals) also played successfully for the “Zebras” in the Bundesliga and 2nd division from 1992 to 1994, scoring 21 goals in 71 games.

His name still has appeal on the Wedau. Due to old ties, Preetz is said to have thought for a long time about possible assistance and continues to be in contact with those responsible.

BZ learned: But he will not accept the position as sports director.

Reason: The economic conditions at MSV are not right to have a positive influence on things.

Problem: The important donor “Schauinslandreisen” has already announced its withdrawal at the end of the 2023/24 season. Not good conditions to achieve a sporting turnaround as a sports director in the winter with new transfers.

The economic situation is bad, the sporting situation is complicated

Because MSV Duisburg is currently in a deep crisis in terms of sport. The Zebras are in last place in the table, have only eight points from 14 games and are six points behind the saving bank.

Even the change of coach – Boris Schommers came on October 9th and has only gotten one point in four games since then – has almost fizzled out without success.

Biggest weakness: Duisburg is far too harmless in attack and has only scored nine goals. That used to be Preetz’s discipline, who is still Hertha’s record goalscorer (84 Bundesliga goals).

Now he has to save his other former club Duisburg from falling into the 4th league.

Curious: MSV has five ex-Hertha professionals in the squad: goalkeeper Dennis Smarsch (24), Marvin Knoll (32), Alexander Esswein (33), Pascal Köpke (28) and Jonas Michelbrink (22).

Preetz will certainly not be No. 6 without an economic miracle on the Wedau…
