For example, due to the great demand -in the gaming area -graphics processors would have developed over the years into “brain for computers” and finally found completely new ways to accelerate computer performance with GPU computing. This now pays off in the event of artificial intelligence, since enormous computing power is required for the training and operation of KIS. Together with the invention of deep learning algorithms and the availability of huge data storage, artificial intelligence was able to make enormous progress.
Even though the name NVIDIA is particularly connected to AI chips and GPUs, the tech group under the leadership of CEO Jensen Huang has long since developed numerous other areas in which its technology can be used. Nvidia has now also ventured into the area of autonomous driving.
Nvidia’s ambitions with self -driving vehicles
The idea of self -driving cars is not new. For years there have been companies that work to develop autonomous vehicle technology, such as the Google sister Waymo. However, the topic received more attention than Tesla boss Elon Musk Published his vision of an autonomous robotaxi fleet consisting of Tesla vehicles. The already existing driving assistance system, which Tesla users are available, was also self-confident, then also called “autopilot”, even if the driver’s full attention is still still necessary when using the system.
As Jensen Huang said at the Tech trade fair CES, according to Business Insider, self-driving vehicles needed three types of progressive computers. It needs a computer that trains the models in such a way that they would understand the world, a computer that runs simulations that give the model the opportunity to practice important, also less likely scenarios in them, and finally you need one more Computer in the car itself. Nvidia has positioned itself so that your own technology can be used in any of these areas.
“Nvidia Drive”
In this way, the company drives a strategy other than Tesla or Waymo, which develop vehicles themselves and build its own brand. In principle, every vehicle could become autonomous with NVIDIA technology, which opens up numerous opportunities for working with car manufacturers and makes it a supplier. According to its own website, Nvidia already has a scalable AI car content with the name “Nvidia Drive”, which covers the entire spectrum of autonomous driving. There are already 225 companies all over the world that would have implemented this platform.
For Huang, there is ultimately no way around the autonomous driving: “Every single car company will have to be autonomous, or it will not be a car company,” said the CEO as part of the CES.
Autonomous vehicles with reset
And yet it does not look like autonomous vehicles are already within reach. In fact, there are quite a few autographs that have recently put on their ambitions in terms of autonomy. For example, Volkswagen and Ford, which focuses on the startup Argo Ai, which focuses on self -driving cars. Or the US giant General Motors, which in December 2024 threw the towel at Robotaxis after billion dollar investments.
Self -driving vehicles still a thing of the future
In fact, it could still take many years before self -driving vehicles on the streets are no longer the exception. The youngest Nvidia manager Ali Kani told AutoCar. He does not assume that this will happen in this decade. “We are not close. It’s super heavy,” said Kani. There are already some vehicles that would offer limited possibilities for autonomous driving so that there could be a big step forward, it needs further progress in the underlying technology: “The software that we are now developing differs significantly from the Software that we developed last year. […] This type of models requires a lot more computing power, much more memory broadband. It takes more sensors such as Lidar and Radar and you need redundant algorithms to ensure security – and they have to run in parallel, which means more computing power. ”
At the same time, it is important that the further development of the autonomous driving is slowly approached: “The industry has to proceed slowly. If a company makes a mistake, the entire industry will be thrown back by a few years. You can only do it if you have proven that it is really safe, “said Kani.
In the past, Tesla in particular had repeatedly caught the headlines because of accidents that had happened under the influence of the autopilot driving assistance system, which shook trust in autonomous driving. The US transport authority NHTSA has already made investigations.
Railwind for autonomous driving through Nvidia CEO
Nevertheless, the statements of the Nvidia Ceos Jensen Huang at the CES breathed more life into the area of autonomous driving. He announced that the largest car manufacturer in the world, Toyota, Nvidia’s Orin chips and the automotive operating system would use to operate the next generation of driver assistance functions. Mercedes-Benz and Tesla rival BYD are already using Orin-Chip. And even Tesla’s autonomy technology is trained with the help of Nvidia’s GPUS, even if the electric car maker relies on his own chips. Nvidia has positioned itself optimally to benefit from the trend of autonomous driving.
