Why a restless winter threatens BVB

A mixed first half of the season is behind Borussia Dortmund. The championship move in the Bundesliga has probably already gone again, in the Champions League the performance of BVB was disastrous.

The continuing unrest around Erling Haaland, the defensive that is not suitable for a title and obvious weaknesses in the squad also mean that the black and yellow are not exactly confident about the future. Coach Marco Rose is also under observation. These are the largest BVB construction sites for 2022:

BVB construction sites: Unrest around Erling Haaland

Not a day goes by without new speculations about the future of Erling Haaland.

In every interview, those responsible for BVB around managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke have to take a position on a possible change in the goalscorer. Marco Rose can hardly hold a press conference without having to talk about the ongoing topic.

Haaland himself does not comment on the rumors, but still heated them up with his personal lap of honor after the home win against Greuther Fürth.

The fact that in the bitter bankruptcy last against Hertha BSC he waved noticeably annoyed after failed actions of his teammates, may indicate that the 21-year-old Norwegian no longer feels so comfortable in Dortmund.

In February, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” wrote last, the decision about Haaland’s stay with BVB will be made. Until then, Borussia will accompany the ongoing topic – and continue to cause unrest. Especially since BVB is extremely dependent on Haaland, who has already scored 19 goals in 16 competitive games in 2021/2022.

BVB construction sites: The defense is not suitable for a title

BVB has already received 26 hits in the previous 17 Bundesliga games, that is 1.5 per game. Five teams from the top half of the table have a better record. In the six Champions League group games, it even conceded a whopping eleven goals.

“The biggest problem for Borussia is on the defensive. Your own great offensive can’t score that many hits in order to always win,” wrote former Bundesliga professional Erik Meijer aptly in a “kicker” after the Hertha game. Column.

The truth is, of course, that numerous injury-related failures repeatedly prevented the Dortmund defensive formation from playing back.

Mats Hummels is also miles behind his strong form from last season. The BVB defense chief has “not this level, this quality in his game at the moment”, stated national coach Hansi Flick in an interview with “RTL / ntv”.

BVB construction sites: weak points in the squad

No adequate backup for Erling Haaland, a lack of speed and dribbling strength on the offensive wings, too little aggressiveness in midfield and generally a clear drop in quality in the second row: the list of problems in the Dortmund squad is long.

In the summer, the BVB bosses were tied on some personnel issues due to the consequences of the pandemic. The same applies to the upcoming winter transfer period.

“At the moment I don’t see any big movement on the access side, and I can’t imagine that on the delivery side either,” confirmed licensed player director Sebastian Kehl of the “WAZ”.

Rose also said with a view to further reductions in viewership or exclusions in the course of stricter Corona rules, “not much will be possible. We also have to look to the well-being of the club.”

The obligations of Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea FC) and Denis Zakaria (Borussia Mönchengladbach), which were discussed in a secret meeting of those responsible after the Hertha game, according to “Bild” are so far not much more than loose thought games.

BVB construction sites: Again and again “mental shit”

Marco Reus’ legendary breakout on the “Sky” microphone was more than two years ago. The debate about the “mentality shit” still accompanies BVB.

“I say that we lack unconditionality. We are Borussia Dortmund, we want to win here in Berlin. And everyone here has to be able to recognize that – in every minute of the game. We talk about attitude,” said Marco Rose, criticizing the attitude of his players the 2: 3 defeat at Hertha BSC surprisingly open.

BVB was “no longer present” at the beginning of the second half against the old lady, rumbled “Sky” expert Lothar Matthäus. Inexplicable fluctuations in performance and, especially in the final phase of the first half of the season, disastrous performances against supposedly small opponents remain a trademark of Borussia.

BVB construction sites: Marco Rose under observation

The fact that his team only occasionally brings their footballing qualities to the field does not throw a good light on Marco Rose.

Neither the system he preferred with a diamond in midfield, nor the switch to a three-way chain on the defensive, brought lasting stabilization. The coach “has so far failed” with the project, which he formulated himself before the season, to instill more consistency in BVB, commented the “WAZ”.

Above all, the huge bad luck with injuries prevents Rose’s work from being viewed too critically within the club. “He gets the time, the first half year wasn’t too bad. He has complete backing, complete confidence,” said Watzke on “Bild-TV” the day after the Hertha bankruptcy.

BVB’s first round record in the Bundesliga is “not exceptional, you won’t be a champion with it, but considering many problems it is okay,” said Kehl, thereby also nipping a possible coaching discussion in the bud.

Rose is at least under public observation as soon as the ball starts rolling again at the beginning of January.
