Who will be Tuchel’s successor? Matthäus likes Sebastian Hoeneß

FC Bayern is looking for a coach. Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is considered the top favorite. But Lothar Matthäus also sees another candidate.

Thomas Tuchel’s era as Bayern coach will be history from summer onwards. Since the announcement of the upcoming separation last year, all of football in Germany has been preoccupied with the question: Who will take over the struggling German record champions from the coming season?

Lothar Matthäus also deals with this question in his latest column for the TV channel Sky. One thing is certain for him: “Due to his CV, his authority and his successful work in Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso has to be at the top of FC Bayern’s list. I don’t know of a coach in Europe or in the world who would be a better fit for Bayern Munich than Xabi Alonso.”

Matthäus: Alonso “not necessarily at a new club”

However, Matthäus does not necessarily assume that Alonso wants to move to Munich. He’s currently concentrating on Leverkusen and that’s a good thing, says Matthäus. Alonso will not put any pressure on himself and will relax and consider his options. “Maybe it’s his dream to coach Bayern, Liverpool or Real at some point. But in my opinion he’s not finished at Leverkusen yet,” said the record international player.

Alonso will not be driven by big names or economic incentives. “That’s why I don’t necessarily see him at a new club next season,” says Matthäus.

Hoeness to FC Bayern?

He doesn’t see other big names like José Mourinho, Joachim Löw or Zinédine Zidane at FC Bayern. “One person I would trust to take on the coaching job in Munich is Sebastian Hoeneß – if he gets the support in the club, and his name already speaks for that,” said Matthäus.

Hoeneß has the Bayern gene in him and did a good job as coach of the second team. “Even if he hasn’t celebrated any great successes yet: everything he does in Stuttgart is effective and he is still on course towards the Champions League with VfB.”
