A man was killed in an exchange of gunfire with US security forces near the White House in Washington. President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time, which was briefly locked down.

Reuters reports that a person approached the checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, pulled a gun from his pocket and began shooting at officers. The suspect was then shot. He was transported with injuries to George Washington Hospital, where he died. A bystander was also injured.
According to local media, the suspect is a person with psychological problems who has previously caused problems and against whom an area ban has been issued.
