WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – The US government has countered speculation that US President Joe Biden could also visit Ukraine during his trip to Europe in the coming days. “The trip will be designed to continue to mobilize the world in support of the Ukrainian people and against President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Twitter on Sunday, referring to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. “But there are no plans to go to Ukraine.” More details about the trip will be shared on Sunday.

The US media has been speculating for days that Biden could visit Poland after his appointments in Brussels.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, also said on the US broadcaster CNN on Sunday that she was not aware of any discussions about a trip to Ukraine. She pointed out that the government is warning US citizens not to travel to Ukraine. “This is a country at war.”

Biden is traveling to Europe on Wednesday, according to the White House. He wants to take part in NATO, G7 and EU summits there on Thursday. It is Biden’s third trip to Europe since taking office in January 2021./cy/DP/mis
