White House: Atrocities in Bucha may be ‘tip of the iceberg’

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – According to the White House, the atrocities in the Ukrainian Bucha could possibly only be “the tip of the iceberg” in the Russian war of aggression. The Russian armed forces “probably also committed atrocities” in those parts of Ukraine to which there is still no access, said spokeswoman for US President Joe Biden, Jen Psaki, on Tuesday. That’s why the world “may have seen the tip of the iceberg” in Bucha, Psaki said. The US had previously warned that it was the “intent” of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the military to commit atrocities in Ukraine.

The pictures of the crimes from Butscha caused horror all over the world: Hundreds of bodies were discovered in the suburb of the capital Kyiv on the weekend after the Russian troops withdrew. Some lay in the street with their hands tied. Ukraine and the US government hold Russian troops responsible for the many deaths in Bucha. Moscow denies this and speaks of “counterfeiting”.

US President Biden called for Putin to be brought to justice for war crimes atrocities. The US government wants to announce further sanctions against Russia this week in coordination with its partners./jbz/DP/he
