Where was Sean Penn? These are the things you want to know about tonight’s Oscars

The 98th Oscar gala was organized last night Finnish time.

At the gala, films and their creators were awarded in a total of 24 categories.

The final results of the pre-favourites

A horror film starring Michael B. Jordan Sinners received no less than 16 Oscar nominations. Sinners ended up winning 4 Academy Awards. Jordan won the best actor Oscar for the film.

Frankenstein-film also received several awards. All in all, three points were accumulated.

The pre-favourite collected the most awards One Battle After Anotherwhich received a total of six Oscars. The film in question was awarded the Oscar for best film, the Oscar for best supporting actor, the Oscar for best acting, the Oscar for best direction, the Oscar for best editing, and the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

The best actress award went to Jessie Buckley for the film Hamlet. The best supporting actor was awarded to Sean Penn for the film One Battle After Another and Amy Madigan for best supporting actress Weaponsfrom the movie.

Historical vertical

For the first time in more than 20 years, a completely new award was presented at the Oscars. It was an Oscar award focused on acting.

The historic award was won by American actress Cassandra Kulukundis for the film One Battle After Another. Kulukundis and One Battle After Another -film director Paul Thomas Anderson have been working together for years.

In his speech, Kulukundis thanked the academy for the new award category. He especially thanked those who have fought for this category. Kulukundis also thanked all previous actors and directors for the work they did for the films.

The 98th Academy Awards were full of historic moments. Among other things, history was made with the award for the best description. Sinners– the cinematographer of the film Autumn Durald of Arkapaw became the world’s first female cinematographer to win an Oscar.

The Oscars saw a tie this year. Comedian Kumail Nanjiani joked when he arrived on stage that the short film category unexpectedly became longer, as there are two winners in the category.

The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva therefore received the same number of points and thus both films won the Academy Award for Best Short Film.

In the 98-year history of the Oscars, there have only been seven ties. The first time was in 1932 by Fredrich March and between Wallace Beery.

In 1968, Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand shared the best actress award.

The last time there was a tie was in 2012, when Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty was awarded the Oscar for best sound effect.

Sean Penn was conspicuous by his absence

The 65-year-old actor star Sean Penn won the third Oscar of his life at the night’s gala. Penn was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor One Battle After Another from the movie.

However, Penn did not arrive to collect his award from the stage, as he was not present at the gala. Penn has publicly said that he doesn’t care about accolades or galas.

– He couldn’t make it tonight, or he didn’t want to come, Kieran Culkin, who distributed the award, sneered at the gala.

According to The New York Times Penn missed the gala while traveling to Europe. He plans to visit Ukraine. Penn is an active supporter of Ukraine and especially of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Today, Penn is part of Hollywood’s elite club, whose members have won three Oscars. She joined Ingrid Bergman, Walter Brennan, Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep as the only performers to win three Oscars. The all-time record belongs to Katharine Hepburn, who won no fewer than four verticals in her career.

Penn has previously won Best Actor for his roles in films Mystic River and Milk.

Swedish film composer Ludwig Göransson has also won three Oscars to date.

Timothée jokes

One gala guest got a lot of jokes. Best actor nominee Timothée Chalamet arrived at the gala together with his wife Kylie Jenner.

Among other things, in the opening remarks of the gala, host and comedian Conan O’Brien joked about Chalamet’s recent uproar. The actor said in an interview earlier this month that no one is interested in opera or ballet as art forms anymore.

It was expected that Chalamet would be acknowledged at the gala. The receipt already came a little unexpectedly in the opening monologue.

– The security arrangements are very tight tonight, O’Brien began.

– There are concerns that the opera and ballet communities will be attacked, O’Brien continued.

The camera moved to a laughing Chalamet in the front row and his partner sitting next to him.

– They’re just mad that you left jazz out of the speeches, O’Brien continued to joke as the audience laughed.

A tender memory

At the Oscars, film industry professionals who died in the last year were remembered poignantly. Rob Reiner, Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara and Robert Redford were remembered in the In Memoriam section.

During the last mentioned Redford’s reminiscence, his co-star Barbra Streisand took the stage.

– When I read The Way We Were -film’s first script, I could only imagine one person to play Hubble, Streisand initially said.

According to Streisand, Redford initially turned down the role, but ultimately agreed. Streisand called the film a “classic love story” that also tells about a dark time in history.

– I miss him now more than ever, even though he loved to tease me, Streisand said of her late friend.

Streisand ended her tribute by singing a short clip of her song The Way We Were.
