When the equestrian voice fell silent

Right up until the end he had followed the sport that shaped his entire life at home in Hamburg with great interest. On December 25, 2011, Hans-Heinrich Isenbart died at the age of 88, and the German cavalry mourned one of their great personalities. Isenbart himself had no success on horseback, but was one of the best-known representatives of German equestrian sport as a TV and radio commentator for 60 years.

With his sonorous voice, Isenbart has been live on site at almost all major equestrian events for ARD from the 1956 Olympics in Stockholm until his retirement in 1987. Thanks to his dedicated reporting, he quickly earned the nickname “voice of equestrian sport”. Hardly anyone else can describe the fascination of riding so brilliantly, and Isenbart is always concerned with the well-being of the horse. A constant reminder in his comments is: “Don’t forget the horses.”

Isenbart was born on February 5, 1923, the son of an officer and a merchant’s daughter. Because of his Jewish grandmother, the National Socialists refused him a career as an officer, which was the basis for a riding career at the time. Instead, he studies law and takes the riding instructor examination. After the Second World War, Isenbart worked as a political and business journalist for what was then Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk, before taking over the sports coordination of ARD in Munich.

Isenbart cannot give up his passion even after retiring and is in action as a tireless tournament speaker and speaker at seminars and congresses. His decades of experience with equestrian sport make him a “horse understanding”, to whom the needs of animals are always the most important. He always advocates a partnership with one another.

The lawyer, journalist, riding instructor, commentator, book author and filmmaker has received several awards for his services to equestrian sport. In 1983 he received the German Equestrian Cross in gold from the German Equestrian Association. In 1997, the Lower Saxony Order of Merit was awarded the First Class Cross of Merit. In 2001 the German Equestrian Olympics Committee (DOKR) made Hans-Heinrich Isenbart an honorary member.
