Wheelchair tennis player De Groot wins all grand slams again

Wheelchair tennis player Diede de Groot has won the US Open for the fifth time. The first seeded Dutch and number 1 in the world did so by beating the Japanese Yui Kamiji, the number 2 of the seeding list, in three sets: 3-6 6-1 6-1. The match lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes.

It is the second year in a row that 25-year-old De Groot conquers all four titles at the grand slams. The day before, she also won the women’s doubles by beating Aniek van Koot against Kamiji and Kgothatso Montjane from South Africa in two sets: 6-2 6-2. Only the Wimbledon final in the women’s doubles she did not win.

The wheelchair tennis title went to Britain’s Alfie Hewett who defeated Japan’s first-seeded Shingo Kunieda, the defending champion and world No. 1, in straight sets: 7-6 (2) 6-1.
