System of a Down and the Bengalos: There is the old cliché that South American fans are more fiery than in this country – and at least as far as pyrotechnics are concerned, this applies to the supporters of a system of a down. With their “Wake Up! South America” tour 2025, Serj Tankian & Co. did not cause flames and smoke, but the fans themselves.
While the band started without their own pyro show, the audience lit numerous Bengalos and fireworks – and made the concerts in Bogotá, Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires and São Paulo true.
System of a Down: Bengalos fever
Bengalos are the handy torches that are otherwise known primarily from South American football stands. In the stadium context, they are used by fan groups to celebrate collective celebrations and create a visual fireworks of red light, smoke and lots of energy. System of a Down also learned this in April and May 2025 in non-football context.
Guitarist Daron Malakian reacted overwhelmed: “This is not a war zone, this is not a riot, this is a system of a down Style Rock & Roll Concert in Brazil!”, He is quoted on the band’s Facebook page.
The band was similarly enthusiastic in another posting. “If you noticed: we don’t have a pyro on stage … but our fans bring the fire again,” said the group.
