What name will Prince William choose when he becomes king?

Prince William was born in 1982 as Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales. It regularly happens that a royal takes one of his or her other first names when they take office as monarch. Former King George VI of the United Kingdom, the father of Queen Elizabeth, was actually called Albert. He changed to his fourth name as a tribute to his father, George V. The former Queen Victoria was also known as Alexandrina before she took the throne.

Tribute

So it may well be that Prince William will choose the title ‘King Philip’ if he takes over from his father, Prince Charles. He would then, like King George VI, pay tribute to one of his ancestors: Prince Philip, who died on April 9 last year, his grandfather and Queen Elizabeth’s husband. He would also be the first King Philip in British history.

William the Victorious

However, there is always a chance that William will keep his current first name. According to historian Robert Lacey, there is a beautiful thought behind it. Prince Charles and Princess Diana are said to have had a big discussion about the name of their first son. Charles wanted to call him Arthus, but Diana preferred the name William. Why did she choose that name? She related: “William, as in ‘William the Victorious’, the one who won the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066.” A cool name to wear.

Amalia

Our own princess Amalia probably also wants to change her name a bit if she takes over from King Willem-Alexander. It is expected that she will soon be called Queen Catharina-Amalia. Chic! You can read all about it here.
