The leaves fall from the trees, the temperature drops and the work and school year get a small break. In short, the autumn holidays have started. For some a welcome moment of rest, for others the perfect moment to go out.

In the Northern Netherlands it seems to be a holiday with changeable weather. Yet it doesn’t get cold and the sun comes out often enough. That is why this article provides a list of tips for both indoor and outdoor activities.

When you think of a safari you may immediately think of lions, buffalos and rhinos on the African savannah. But you can also go on an adventure closer to home.

A special experience awaits you this Tuesday: the Bossafari. Together with a nature guide you enter the Drents-Friese Wold and discover nature in a completely different way.

The forest safari is especially for children from 6 years old and their (grand)parents. There is plenty to do during a short walk. Smell the scent of damp forest floor, look for animal tracks and admire the bright colors of the autumn forest.

The excursion starts at 1:30 PM at the Staatsbosbeheer Outdoor Center in Appelscha and lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Autumn is of course also the season of mushrooms. On Thursday 23, National Park Drentsche Aa organizes a mushroom excursion around the Blankeveen near Schoonloo. The excursion starts at 10 a.m. at the parking lot on Olle Hullenweg and lasts approximately two hours.

During the walk you and a guide will look for the many types of mushrooms that can be found in the forest around Blankeveen. Along the way the guide tells you how and why mushrooms grow and of course what they are called.

According to the organization, the tour is suitable for young and old, and just like the forest safari, grandpas and grandmas are very welcome!

There is plenty to discover in nature during the autumn holidays. But various nature activities are also offered indoors. In Sea Museum Miramar in Vledder, children can create their own underwater world with different animals and plants on Thursday, October 23.

An open laboratory day is scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, with shell experts present. With the help of a microscope, young researchers can look for special shells in the shell grit.

The activities start at 1:00 PM on both days.

There is also plenty to do in the arts during the autumn holidays in Drenthe. In Eext, artist Geke Hoogstins will give a lecture about her work on Friday, October 24. It focuses on how she incorporates the stories, sacrifices and myths of the old Drenthe landscape into her art.

One of the works, titled Stiffveenfor example, is inspired by the location of the Yde Girl.

The lecture starts at 7:30 PM.
