The Ministry of Defense resisted for a week, but finally made the commitment on Thursday: 80 soldiers are now helping out in the arrivals center on the site of the former Tegel Airport.
The Senate is disappointed with the support from other federal states. Social Senator Katja Kipping (44, left): “At the moment, Berlin is doing as much accommodation as all other federal states put together.”

Some districts would even send refugees back to Berlin because of alleged procedural errors, the politician reported to the social committee.
On Wednesday afternoon there was a surprising offer from the federal government: buses for 5,000 people could be made available the next day. “That may be meant kindly, but it’s a quick hit,” says Kipping. “Not practical and not realizable!”
